New to Crew?

Here are the basics you need to know!

WHAT: The most basic description of the sport – teams racing in boats using oars, also known as rowing. Oh but it is so much more! Crew is a full-body, muscle-building, cardio intense, yet low impact workout that you can participate in throughout your whole life.

WHO: YHS Crew is open to Yorktown, Arlington Tech, and HB Woodlawn students, and 8th graders who will be at Yorktown in the Fall of 2023. Rowers are split up into girls & boys teams as well as novice and experienced. No experience is required to join in on the fun!

WHEN: Crew winter conditioning (not required) starts November 17 to get rowers ready for tryouts in February. Those who have never rowed before will learn all the techniques each afternoon after school. The Spring season starts in March and runs through May with regattas and scrimmages most Saturdays.

WHERE: Winter conditioning takes place at YHS with the use of rowing machines (ergs). Tryouts week, Spring practices, and home races take place on the Potomac River out of Thompson Boat Center.

WHY: Crew teaches key life skills such as time management, accountability, responsibility, cooperation, discipline and dedication. And you make life-long friends!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: To participate in winter conditioning, rowers must register starting October 17, pay the registration fee, and submit the student’s athletic physical form. (Email registrar@yorktowncrew.org with questions.) To make the team, students must participate in tryouts week.

HOW CREW IS MADE POSSIBLE: Crew is made possible by the operational & financial support of the Crew Boosters. Registration fees and fundraising efforts are critical to cover the cost of equipment, insurance & other essential items.
