Learn more about rowing for Yorktown

Rowing:  A competitive sport of boats that are narrow.
   —Great Soviet Encyclopaedia

YHS Crew has grown significantly since its humble beginning in 1967 as a kayaking club. It is now the second largest sport at the high school.

This year, more than 110 students are on the men’s and women’s teams. Participation is open to all YHS students as well as H-B Woodlawn students from the Yorktown attendance area.  When space permits, eighth graders who attend Arlington Public Schools and live in the Yorktown attendance area may participate.

Did you know?

  • All of our athletes learned to row either in 8th grade or high school -- no one comes in with experience.
  • Many of our athletes compete in more than one sport at YHS.
  • Rowing programs exist at more than 100 U.S. colleges and universities, and many Yorktown alumni have continued rowing in college. Recent Yorktown graduates are attending/rowing at Princeton, UVA, Yale, Colby, Cornell, Brown and Harvard, to name just a few.
  • Most rowing colleges recruit experienced athletes.
  • More Olympic medals are awarded in rowing than in any other sport.
  • People compete in rowing well into adulthood--several parents in our community row in masters rowing programs today.
